Conference/CLE Credits
LGA’s bi-annual conferences and regional seminar all provide updates on issues of local government law, trial and appellate practice, and related fields. Speakers include government and private attorneys in Virginia, as well as state and federal judges. Programs are held across the state and offer Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credit and ethics credits annually. Members receive a discount on the registration fee.
Forums
LGA’s Forums makes it easy to consult with, and receive guidance from, fellow LGA members and engage in specific practice group discussion and conduct Board and committee work. This network of professional colleagues is available to members only.
Handbook
LGA publishes the annual Handbook of Virginia Local Government Law, an invaluable resource addresses key areas of local government law for both public and private practitioners. The Handbook is available to members at no fee. Non-members may purchase this resource.
Monthly Newsletter
LGA publishes the monthly Bill of Particulars, produced by and for attorneys. It focuses on immediate local government issues—primarily court decisions. The Bill of Particulars is the only publication of its type in Virginia and is available only to LGA members.
Amicus Briefs
LGA periodically files amicus curiae briefs in cases involving important local government issues. Past amicus briefs have dealt with such issues as freedom of information, zoning, and taxation.
Online Services
LGA’s website includes member-only access to a membership directory, job postings, information on member services, and CLE materials from past conferences.
Practice Groups
LGA members may join practice groups in particular areas of the law. These groups discuss issues of common interest and sponsor educational activities to meet group needs.
Public Policy Resource
LGA is regularly asked by both the Virginia General Assembly and state agencies to offer legal advice on state policy issues, or to recommend knowledgeable member attorneys to serve on legislative study committees and commissions.
Other Benefits
LGA has several awards programs to recognize member accomplishments. Members come to LGA for the resources and stay for the regular engagement with colleagues through forums, conference attendance, and service on committees that help the association function and grow our community.
